The History of Macleod Savings

On the evening of September 25, 1941 in the Old Government Garage with seven persons present, a motion was passed which conceived Macleod Savings & Credit Union Limited at Fort Macleod. Upon receiving its charter on October 2, 1941 the credit union was officially open for business. At the second annual meeting Macleod Savings & Credit Union had a membership of 52, share savings of $475.00 and loans of $460.00.

On December 13, 1944 the Claresholm Community Savings & Credit Union received its charter of incorporation. It occupied various part-time premises in the rear of local stores for a number of years and in March of 1969, the credit union purchased a permanent office and hired full-time staff. In February of 1969 Claresholm Community Savings & Credit Union amalgamated with Macleod.

In the fall of 1961 a group of concerned citizens of Vulcan and district got together with a proposal to start a credit union in Vulcan. Vulcan received its charter on November 8, 1962 with an inaugural meeting held at the Alberta Wheat Pool, Elevator No. 3 and became the Vulcan and District Savings & Credit Union. On March 1, 1973 Vulcan amalgamated with Macleod.

Nanton and District Savings & Credit Union Limited received its charter on June 14, 1956. In March of 1977, following the lead of Vulcan, the Nanton and District Savings & Credit Union Limited amalgamated with Macleod.

By December of 1978, Macleod Savings & Credit Union had grown in excess of $26 million dollars in assets with a membership of 7.750, a staff of 30 employees and 4 thriving branches.

Today the Credit Union maintains a 4 branch operation with assets in excess of $120 million dollars, 7,300 active members, 40 employees and 4 automated teller machines. In addition it offers internet and telephone banking. The Credit Union celebrated its 65th anniversary on October 2, 2006.
